Harsin Beige Marble Quarry (Kermanshah Province)
Location of the Quarry
The
Quarry is located in 26 km east of Kermanshah City, near Hersin City. This quarry
has been exploiting by Shahab Sang Mining Industries since 2000
and is considered as one of the greatest quarry in the region now.
Geological Characteristics of the Mine
The mineral extracted from the quarry is the beige
microcrystalline limestone which relates to the Triassic units extending about
11 km from west-north to east-south on units of shale, sandstone, marlstone and
colorful radiolarian cherts in Kermanshah Province. The whole complex has
transformed into a highland due to tectonic and orogenic processes. Existing
layers of microcrystalline limestone in the solid beige color with ‘average to
high’ degree of change have paved the way for the emergence of many mines along
this area; Shah Maleki quarry owned by Shahab Sang Mining Industries is
considered the best quarry among these many quarry.
Secondary calcite veins inside the ore have led to the
generation of various stone designs, known as ‘Antler’ in the market. The
dominant appearance in these stones is stag horn and mid- and post-Triassic
fossils are observed therein.
Quarry Products
The quarry products is bright beige marble blocks
in varying proportions and weights (in metric tons), of different quality
ratings including export-proper, high quality, grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3.
The quarry produces 35,000 metric tons a year of
marble blocks. The dominant method employed for extraction is the wire saw
mining; however, a combination of chain saw and wire saw methods is also used.
